College Students Visit and Tour Hardwood Sawmill

Again this year, our Donalds, SC sawmill and lumber concentration yard hosted a group of Forestry students from Clemson University. This year’s tour provided students the opportunity to bridge their classroom learning with in-field experiences.

The management team of Matt Reynolds, Matt Fisk and Scott Stringer hosted an in-depth yard tour for Clemson’s Summer Forest Products program. Students and professors got the chance to observe the entire process of how hardwood lumber is manufactured from logs to lumber.

Tour highlights included:clemson-students-2016

    • Log delivery and grading
    • Sawmill operations
    • Kiln drying techniques
    • Hardwood lumber grading
    • Sorting practices
    • Hardwood lumber packaging
    • Truck & container loading and shipments

“It was great to once again be a tour stop for the Clemson Summer Forest Program,” said Matt Reynolds head sawmill and yard manager. “We enjoy the opportunity to expose new students to the industry and hopefully help them validate they want to pursue a career in the forest products industry someday.”

Two featured highlights of this year’s tour were the importance of worker safety and the introduction of the new timber mat program at the facility which was of great interest to the students.
