Are You Considering Poplar More Frequently

One of the most abundant hardwood species in North America is poplar, (Liriodendron tulipifera).  From what we can tell the demand for this versatile lumber is steady and climbing.

The ways manufactures have used poplar have remained fairly consistent over the years.  For example:consider more poplar

  • Trim & Mouldings - Ceiling molding and trim is a common application for poplar.  It is known to be stable, paint and stain well and is regularly found in longer lengths, (12’,14’ & 16’). We have also seen specifically 6/4 poplar being glued up and used on a regular basis for corbels which has been interesting.
  • Cabinetry – With the continued use of painted cabinetry in homes, the use of poplar in cabinets has been steady. Recently, we have also seen an increase in poplar being used in draw sides that has proven to be successful.
  • Upholstered Furniture – Poplar continues to be a common material for upholstered furniture due to its durability and workability.
  • Pallets, boxes and crates – Poplar has many industrial type uses such as pallets, crates and boxes.

Within The Baillie Group we manufacture and inventory poplar hardwood lumber in nearly every one of our sawmill facilities and concentration yards.  It is mostly available in thicknesses ranging from 4/4 through 10/4 and with  limited availability 12/4 and 16/4.
