Try Caribbean Walnut as an Alternative to American Walnut

Caribbean Walnut may not be as well known as a hardwood species in the North American markets, but it is something you will see all over Central America, it’s native area.

With an apparent shortage of Prime American Walnut in the market, now would be a good time to take another look at Caribbean Walnut, also know as Tzalam. It is priced competitively to American Walnut and the grade is above Fas/1F White Oak grading. IMG 1867

Caribbean Walnut is a dense wood with a kiln-dried weight of 4.1 lbs per board foot, very similar to the weight of White Oak, it is very durable and rot-resistant.

Common uses for Caribbean Walnut include flooring, furniture, veneer, tabletops, trim, and woodturning. Tzalam has a reported Janka Hardness of 1,400 which is right above White Oak, making it suitable for many more purposes than American Walnut.

If you are unfamiliar with this species and would like to receive a sample please reach out to one of our representatives or our tropical department directly.
