Sapele "Entandrophragma cylindricum"

Written by Jesper Bach

Sapele has taken over as the primary mahogany species used in the US market. In the past it was Genuine Mahogany and African Mahogany before the big change to Sapele in the early 2000s.

It is readily available in Africa and comes primarily from the Congo basin where the main exporters are Cameroon and Congo. It is also available in Ghana and Ivory Coast, but in a lighter color that isn’t as attractive to US and Canadian customers. DSC7865

It is perhaps the most uniform colored “mahogany” species available and it machines very nicely, and it is really easy to work with. There is a significant difference between the flat sawn and the quarter-sawn product, we separate it all after kiln drying to cater to the specific needs of our customers.

Sapele is used in millwork, doors, windows, musical instruments, furniture and almost everything else you can imagine. There is a great variety of widths and lengths available and we carry it from 4/4” and all the way up to 16/4” in thickness.
