Versatile and Unique: Sapele

Sapele is one tropical species that has been growing in popularity. With its consistent dark brown color, stable nature and great versatility, Sapele is commonly used in the creation of furniture products, high-end cabinets, doors, windows, hardwood flooring, paneling, and even musical instruments (especially acoustic and electric guitar bodies).

P6260173One of the characteristics of Sapele lumber makes it truly unique is its interlocking grain. When Sapele trees grow, the grains in the lumber twist and interlock in irregular intervals which create a distinct look. This is especially true when the Sapele logs are rifted and quartered giving it a gorgeous ribbon-like grain that really stands out in a finished product.

Sourced from West Africa, primarily Cameroon and Congo, at Baillie we secure Sapele lumber from reputable suppliers that we have established strong relationships over the years. This gives us the ability to ensure that we have a consistent supply of Sapele lumber and that our supply is compliant to the many harvesting rules such as the Lacey Act.

We personally dry 100% of our Sapele inventory at our facility in North Carolina to ensure that it is dried properly. This relieves lumber stress and enhances the overall quality of the lumber in the process. Available in all standard thicknesses from 4/4 to 16/4 we can meet many of our customers needs for their specific application.

Sapele is being used more frequently by many craftsmen for a variety of applications. If you currently are using Sapele or are considering using it in the future, contact us. With a reputation for being able to offer unique grain and width sorts, we would be happy to see how we might be able to help.
