5 Tips for Effective Reputation Management

Few things in business are assured, but one truth is absolute: Companies must diligently manage and protect their reputation. In our digital era this top priority mostly applies to your online status, where even a seemingly insignificant consumer complaint can cause severe damage to your reputation.

Here at Baillie Lumber, we’re constantly working to maintain a positive business reputation through a variety of online monitoring measures and—of course—by delivering high-quality hardwood lumber products with top-notch customer service. Here are five tips that can help you manage and maintain your businesses reputation:DSC3293

  1. Be active on your social media. Maintaining an active social media presence can significantly enhance your Google ranking—often the first place people go to look into your business. Both your Twitter and Facebook pages should include certain essentials (company name, a profile photo, location, description and link to your website). Work on increasing the number of followers by regularly posting new content, everything from product-related announcements and how-to articles to videos of company activities and employee get-togethers.
  1. Craft a prominent and appealing “About Us” page. This may be among the most important reputation management actions you can take. Include photos of top leaders so people can get a visual sense of your leadership team. Equally important are detailed “About Us” profiles of the members of the executive team. Many high-ranking business leaders “don’t realize that their desire for privacy shouldn’t equate with zero online presence,” notes MarketingLand.
  1. Pay attention to internal communications. Keep in mind that your employees are also active on social media. The level of employee satisfaction in the workplace “comes across in social media, their communication with clients, and everyone else listening,” as marketing expert Radek Meljon writes. “Influencing your people” is among the “most straightforward yet necessary ways to influence your reputation.”
  1. Encourage the development of employee ambassadors. Speaking of your workforce, an effective reputation management strategy includes enlisting employees to spread the word about your business on their social media platforms. Take time to design a set of guidelines they can follow, with respect to posting news and comments about your business and, of course, checking that their Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn profile pages are appropriately worded and linked to your company’s social media channels.
  1. Gather and promote customer testimonials. Customers everywhere are interested in how well others have been served by your company. It’s up to you to regularly solicit and collect favorable customer testimonials to post on your site, on social media channels, and elsewhere. Don’t be shy about asking customers to post good online reviews of how your product or service helped a buyer solve a problem and gain a benefit such as saving time or money or increasing profits,” says marketing consultant Robert Bly.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming your reputation “can take care of itself.” In the volatile world of online marketing and sales, it’s vital to continuously monitor and address anything that can harm your reputation. The future success of your business may depend on it.

What tips do you have that have helped you manage the reputation for your business?
