Different Tropical Wood Products; Stumps and Slabs from Brazil

Sometimes you never know what you are going to see on a sawmill trip to Brazil.

A few weeks ago I was in Brazil visiting many of our premier suppliers looking to secure traditional lumber for the first half of 2018.  During my trip I was introduced to a inventory of unique tropical wood products you do not normally see in the Unites States.

Decorative stumps2Most of these products are best described as decorative stumps and slabs.  I found the stumps in two primary species, Carapanauba and  Acariquara.  The supplier provides then in heights ranging from 85-100cm (33-39”). They are dried to a moisture content of about 18-20% before shipment.  They are sold on a per piece basis, not by footage, and approximately 50-70 pieces can be loaded into a standard shipping container.  It was interesting to find out that these products were available as both FSC and non FSC and that all pieces are tagged at the time of cutting, so if required, they can be traced back to the root in the forest.

The hardwood slabs I came across were in multiple species.  Most of them were in Cumaru, Jatoba, and Itauba. But there were others.  These items were tallied and sold on board feet.

Over the years we have seen these unique products be used to make tables, countertops, headboards, and even decorative wall art.  The beautify of them all is that no two pieces are exactly alike.

If you are looking for something unique and distinctive consider these tropical stumps and slabs from Brazil. You will not be disappointed!
