Could 6/4 Width Sorted Red Oak Be Better for You?

Red oak is still one of the most popular and plentiful hardwoods in the market. For years it has been one of the most widely used species for things such as furniture, fine cabinetry, mouldings and flooring. It is also one of the most requested hardwoods for export which continues to keep it in high demand on a global basis.

10" and wider 6/4 red oakBy far, the majority of red oak that we produce and provide to our customers is in the 4/4 or 8/4 thickness. However, for sawmills to operate efficiently, some 6/4 red oak needs to be produced as well to maximize the true value of the log.

Over the last few years, Baillie Lumber has increased its production of 6/4 red oak throughout or system. Because of this we are able to now provide width sorted 6/4 red oak to our customers without impacting the general random width and length products we regularly distribute.

Usually manufacturers of doors, stair rails and balusters would see great value in receiving s specific width sort of 6/4 red oak to produce their products. Whether it be an 8” width sort for door manufacturers, a 6” width sort for hand rail makers or even a wide sort such as 9” or 10” and wider for a very special application could be extremely valuable in certain instances. We have also seen moulding manufactures see value in combining a specific width sort of 6/4 red oak with longer lengths, such as 12’, 14’ or 16’ which overtime is something we can provide.

If you use 6/4 red oak in your applications and are interested in trying to develop a regular supply of a certain width let us know. We would be happy to try to help.
