What is FSC Certification for Hardwood Lumber?

These days more building projects specify environmentally friendly building materials such as North American sourced hardwood lumber.  This trend is a relatively new phenomenon.

Back in the 1980’s and early 1990’s one of the major issues in the global forest products industry was tropical rainforest deforestation.  In 1992 a group of businesses, industry leaders and environmentalists cooperated to form the Forest Stewardship FSC BaillieCouncil. The goal of this council is to promote sustainable forest management around the world. Today the Forest Stewardship Council operates in more than 80 countries and operates its United States Chapter out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Forest Stewardship Council works with landowners, timber harvesters, hardwood manufacturers and ultimately distributors and retails to certify that certain lumber products originate from FSC certified forests.  These forests are managed to meet FSC standards and the products from these forests are processed in a way that provides environmental and social benefits.

Baillie Lumber Co. is FSC Chain of Custody certified.  This certification verifies that the lumber we label as FSC certified originated from a certified or controlled source.  This certification is commonly sought after by architects, designers and contractors working on environmentally friendly projects such as those governed by the EU Ecolabel scheme for furniture, or the US Green Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Within this category it is common to see two certification labels, FSC Mix Credit and FSC 100% .  Both types are considered FSC certified.

FSC Mix Credit indicates that the labeled material or its equivalent volume “credits” came from an FSC certified forest.  The material may contain lumber that originated from a certified forest as well as lumber that came from a controlled forest. Controlled forests are referred to as controlled wood forests and have proven to have minimal risk of using lumber from ‘unacceptable’ sources.  Most of the lumber originating from hardwood forests in Canada and the United States can qualify as controlled.

FSC 100% means that all of the material came from an FSC certified forest and the lumber people purchase has been kept intact and separated from other lumber throughput the entire process.

Our inventory of FSC hardwood lumber varies day to day based on our current inventory levels and order requests. However, if you have an hardwood lumber question related to FSC let us know.  We will do our best to help in any way we can.
