Careers in Operations

Baillie Lumber is regularly looking to hire career minded individuals interested working in sawmills or hardwood lumber concentration yard environments.  Typical positions include:

Lumber Handler

  • Lumber handlers keep the material moving in our manufacturing facilities.  They learn to identify and sort hardwood lumber in each of the different stages of the process. 

Lumber Inspector

  • Inspectors inspect both green lumber in the sawmill and kiln dried lumber in our yards  as well as lumber from outside vendors according to NHLA and proprietary criteria.  They ensure the quality of lumber is accurate and up to our company standards.


  • Our Sawyers manufacture green hardwood lumber from logs by using state of the art sawing and scanning equipment. They determine the optimum cutting methods for each log to maximize value, fulfill cutting orders and production requirements.


  • Our Foresters are responsible to work with local loggers and land owners to supply logs to our sawmills.  This includes locating, assessing, costing and negotiating the purchase and successful harvest of standing timber.

Mill and Yard Managers

  • Mill and Yard Managers are responsible for directing and managing all aspects of the facility where they work. Manufacturing, safety, production, maintenance, hiring and training of employees and product quality are just a few of the important responsibilities of the positon.

Heavy Equipment Operators and Drivers

  • Equipment operators move lumber throughout our facilities. Whether operating front loaders or driving forklifts, operators and drivers keep our manufacturing process moving forward.

Maintenance Mechanics

  • Maintenance Mechanics are responsible for troubleshooting, servicing and maintaining industrial equipment in our facilities.  They are responsible for ensuring all equipment is in top operating condition by following preventive maintenance measures and correcting problems as they arise.

Interns and Trainees

  • Internship and trainee programs are a great avenue for college students and recent graduates to gain valuable experience in the hardwood lumber industry.  Our programs give participants the opportunity to fully immerse themselves into our company's business, culture, and marketplace.
