Where is all the 7 foot and 8 foot red oak?

Red oak is one of the most popular hardwood species requested.  We see it as a regularly requested material for the manufacturing of everything from flooring and furniture to moulding and millwork.

The vast majority of sawmills will cut red oak in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4.  There is always a little 10/4 and 12/4 being cut, but it is not the norm.  As for length structure red oak is available in all lengths ranging from 6’ to 16’ on a regular basis.

Recently we have seen an increased demand for 7’ and 8’ lengths.  In the past, these lengths have been very popular with solid hardwood door manufacturers.  From what we see this is still the case. These manufacturers would order both 4/4 and 8/4 red oak, typically a higher grade sort with an abundance of clears in it, to use in the making of the doors stiles, rails and panels.

7’ and 8’ red oak is also a very popular export item.   Companies in the Middle East and China have regularly requested this special sort. This is no surprise knowing those are historically two of the largest markets for red oak overall.

Baillie Lumber works with our customers to help them secure a regular and consistent supply of special red oak sorts.  Whether it is special length sorts such as 7' and 8' only, or even custom width sorts, color sorts or premium grades, we work hand-and-hand with our customers to develop an inventory management program that ensures they have the lumber when and where they need it.

If you are looking for a more consistent supply of hardwood lumber contact us to discuss how we might be able to help.
