Why North American Hardwood Logs are in Demand

North American hardwood logs are in great demand.   To give you a sense of magnitude, a recent hardwood industry report indicated that the volume of hardwood logs exported in 2014 surpassed 2,000,000 cubic meters (M3).  Two of the most popular species were red oak and white oak logs.

So why are North American hardwood logs in such high demand? We suspect one reason is the variety of timber in North America. Throughout North America’s woodlands you will find hardwood log species with a wide selection of colors, textures, and hardwood log yardgrain patterns.  From white oak and walnut in the Midwest to ash, red oak, and maple in the Northeast.

Another reason is quality.  Proven modern day forestry practices used in North America ensures the highest quality hardwoods in the world.

A third reason is sustainability.  It is a little well known fact that North American hardwood forests are plentiful. The sustainable forestry management programs used within the United States have resulted in our forestlands growing at twice the rate they are being harvested. In some areas like Pennsylvania, hardwood stands are growing at three times the rate they are being harvested.  Professional loggers have access to timber on a regular basis which means that manufacturers have access to a regular supply of the raw materials they need to be successful.

Baillie Lumber has a division that specializes specifically in hardwood log sales.  If you are interested in learning more about the export process, the species available, or just our log products in general let us know.  We would be happy to help.
